Football’s top brand – Real Madrid
Posted on May 16, 2019
REAL MADRID is, arguably, the most famous football club in the world. The queues of people that snake their way around the club’s impressive Bernabéu Stadium, even on days when the team is not in town, makes Real one of the Spanish capital’s major landmarks.
Real Madrid is also the most valuable football brand in world football. Valued at €1.65 billion, the club is ahead of a European peer group that includes Manchester United (€1.47bn), Barcelona (€1.39bn), Bayern Munich (€1.31bn), Manchester City (€1.26 bn), Liverpool (€1.19bn), Chelsea (€0.97bn) and Paris Saint-Germain (€0.91bn).
Real Madrid returned to the top of Brand Finance’s brand valuation of football clubs by growing their value by 17%, an increase partly attributable to the club winning its fourth UEFA Champions League in five years. With Manchester United losing 6% of their value, Real Madrid was able to regain top position in Brand Finance’s valuation table.
Today, Real Madrid is not only the most valuable football brand, but is also the sector’s strongest brand, ahead of Barcelona and Bayern Munich. The club may have relinquished its UEFA Champions League crown for the first time since 2015 in the 2018-19 season, and has once more been outperformed domestically by fierce rivals Barcelona, but the financial, cultural, and political clout of Real Madrid places it ahead of its rivals, despite the loss of talismanic forward Cristiano Ronaldo, who left Madrid for Juventus in 2018.
