European Round-up: Inter champions, Feyenoord win KNVB, Real secure late winner in El Clasico

Italy: Inter Milan have clinched their 20th Scudetto, beating local rivals Milan 2-1 at the San Siro. Inter took the lead in the 18th minute through Francesco Acerbi and added a second from Marcus Thuram in the 49th. Milan pulled one back 10 minutes from time through Fikayo Tomori. The game was bad tempered at times, Milan had Theo Hernández and Davide Calabria sent off and Inter’s Denzel Dumfries was also red-carded. The victory meant Inter went 17 points clear of second-placed Milan with five games to go. They have lost just once this season in Serie A and have scored 79 goals and conceded just 18.

Netherlands: Feyenoord won the KNVB Cup, beating NEC Nijmegen 1-0 in the final. The winning goal was scored by Igor Paixão in the 59th minute.  The game was suspended twice due to a small fire being lit behind the goal and Feyenoord also had Yankuba Minteh sent off. Feyenoord have won the KNVB Cup 15 times. This victory follows their Eredivisie triumph in 2022-23 and adds to the growing reputation of coach Arne Slot, who has now been linked to Liverpool. Meanwhile, in the league, PSV Eindhoven are on the brink of clinching the Eredivisie title. A win this weekend will more or less be enough for them to become champions for the 25thtime.

Germany: Newly-crowned champions, Bayer Leverkusen only just kept their unbeaten record when they drew 1-1 with Borussia Dortmund. Josip Stanisic netted an equaliser in the 97th minute in response to Niclas Füllkrug’s goal in the 81st minute. Bayern Munich, still smarting from losing their title but doubtless buoyed by their win against Arsenal in the Champions League, beat Union Berlin 5-1 in the German capital.

France: Paris Saint-Germain are also edging closer to securing the Ligue 1 title. They won 4-1 against Lyon, their opponents in the Coupe de France final in May. PSG rested Kylian Mbappé but saw Goncalo Ramos score twice and Lucas Beraldo also find the scoresheet. Lyon’s former Chelsea and Manchester United midfielder Nemanja Matic scored an own goal.

Spain: Real Madrid won El Clasico by 3-2 at the Bernabeu, despite Barcelona leading twice during the course of the 90 minutes. Andres Christensen opened the scoring in the sixth minute but Vinicius equalised with a penalty in the 18th. Barca went in front again from Fermin Lopez with 20 minutes remaining and four minutes later, it was 2-2 thanks to Lucas Vazquez. Finally, Jude Bellingham netted the winner as the game ran into added time.  Barca were incensed, however, by Lamine Yamal’s earlier effort being ruled because it was judged not to have crossed the goal-line. Xavi called the decision a disgrace and called for better technology in La Liga.
